An Interview with Charlotte Barcham // LFW Model

This is the first interview as part of my media industry series on my blog and it is with London Fashion Week model, Charlotte Barcham.

Charlotte is currently at University studying Journalism and has walked four seasons at London Fashion week since 2015. Walking for various designers and has featured in Vogue, at the age of 19, that is an achievement to be proud of!

For those who haven’t read your blog post, how did you get to be a part of LFW?
It’s a bit of a random story but my school were doing a charity fashion show in which I was part of the media team. To make the show the best we could we asked for the help of Top Model show executive Geoff Cox who decided he wanted to help us as part of the community partnership initiative. Geoff also runs a successful LFW show called Fashion International which made us all so excited and nervous! I was filming at the model auditions where he told me I should be in the show as a model and he instantly put my name on the list. I was a little reluctant at first but I’m so glad I did it because after we finished the charity show he asked me to walk at his LFW show. I can’t tell you how amazing that felt.
What advice do you have for those who want to be part of LFW?
First of all I’m no expert and I realise I’m very very lucky to do a LFW show without any experience. Obviously walking in LFW is hard and the best way you can do it is to have an agency.
What lessons have you learnt in regards to the fashion industry and the way it works? The fashion industry is tough! It’s so unique and so much hard working goes into EVERYTHING. I really admire the amount of people that help to put on the shows.

Who are your biggest fashion inspirations?
My biggest fashion inspirations are Olivia Palermo, Kate Moss and Karlie Kloss. I think they are all such amazing role models.
Why do you think LFW is more popular nowadays?
I feel like it has always been popular but I think it has been enhanced by social media such as Snapchat and Instagram. It is common now for the looks to be photographed or filmed and shared via them.
What has been your favourite outfit to walk in?
My favourite outfit to walk in has been this gorgeous ball gown by Yuvna Kim during SS18. The intricate detailing is so stunning. Her dresses make you feel amazing and she always makes you feel so comfortable.

What has been your highlight of walking LFW?
My biggest highlight of walking is being featured on the Vogue website. I can’t really put into words how grateful I am to have been given such a wonderful opportunity. To have my face on the Vogue website feels like a dream! It makes me so happy. Also, it’s always a pleasure getting to meet such an amazing group of people. From the designers, to the hair and make up teams, to the models, I have made some great friends along the way.
Have you ever attended a show?

I’ve never actually attended a show as much as I’d love to! It’s definitely something I want to do so maybe next year.

What has been your favourite fashion trend of 17?
I’ve particularly loved how the colour red has been so popular this year. It’s added a whole new dimension to my wardrobe and is such a flattering colour on everyone! You can save a dull outfit with a pop of red.
Would you want to take your modelling career further?
I would absolutely love to take my modelling career further. Not many people know this but I have had opportunities where I’ve been approached by agencies but have unfortunately not been successful in the end. It’s a tough industry and whilst I’m studying I can’t pursue it as much as I would love to but I hope that having a big social media presence keeps my doors open for future possibilities.

Will you be walking LFW again in the future?
I have no idea if I’ll be walking in lfw again. So far I have been asked back 4 times but you can never assume. I sincerely hope so!
What is next for you?
At the moment I am focused on trying to build my blog and social media whilst working towards my ultimate goal of getting a first at uni. I want to be successful in the fashion industry some how be it as a journalist, blogger or model.
